This fall, Sgt Tom was injured in an IED explosion during a combat mission that also fatally injured fellow soldiers. This was Sgt. Tom's fourth deployment to Afghanistan. Sgt. Tom lost his right eye, damaged his left eye and suffered a collapsed lung in the blast. Despite his injuries, Tom is alert and continues to have a positive attitude. He has undergone several surgeries so far and has been busy with physical, occupational and speech therapy. His left eye is expected to heal. His family and community have rallied around him in support. For the time being, the family requests your prayers and good wishes.
UPDATE: We now have an address for Sgt Tom if you would like to send him cards of support and encouragement! Megan tells us that "Tom is doing great as he improves each day trying to achieve one more goal. He is very eager and a hard worker! He wants to express "Thanks" to everyone for their prayers and asks for continued support!"
The following is a message from Megan on behalf of her brother, Sgt. Tom:
"Sgt. Tom wishes to send "Thank Yous" to everyone across the nation for the countless cards, letters of support, pictures from students in school, and "wishes of Good Will" extended to him and his family. This is a long journey of healing and the support in prayer is felt in all of the hearts of his family"
December was a month of recovery and rehab exercises for Tom. He returned to his base earlier in the month where he continued his therapy. He underwent foot surgery to realign bones to speed up the healing process and with another two months of recovery, he should be able to walk on his own! The doctors are watching the strength in his eye very closely as it will take a while to heal, but it is showing signs of improvement.
Continued prayers for healing and encouragement are needed to support Sgt. Tom and his family on the road to recovery.
An update from Sgt Tom's siter Megan:
"This is a week of healing for Tom as he recovers from one of his facial surgeries. Tom rested much over the days following his surgery. Our family is visiting with Tom, and he feels good. Indicators of follow-up observations by the medical staff are giving this visit to Walter Reed a thumbs up! Tom continues to move forward with his positive attitude.
Tom and Janine had some time to visit friends and sights in Washington DC this trip! They enjoyed the museums on the National Mall.
We want to Thank Everyone for prayers for Tom and his comrades! We ask that everyone passes along American Pride and show American colors of RED, WHITE and BLUE."
Let's keep our cards and letters of support coming to Sgt Tom!
We wanted to share this wonderful video of Sgt. Tom with all of you.
