Information and Updates for Sgt. Helaina with Army National Guard
Last Update: 8/21/2013             << Back to list

Operation PAL Participant Army Sgt. Helaina is a military policewoman who was the victim of a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in June 2012. She suffered what is described as "a shattered leg and other injuries". We know that explosions create injuries too many to mention and are usually lumped together in the "other" category. Please pray that her body heals quickly. Helaina's mother Jeannine, a nurse, is by her side as she recovers wile her Dad remains at home to keep things going there. She needs to regain her health in order to raise her 2 year old son, Aden.

Update: 8/20/2012 Helaina's injuries are mostly to her right side. She has been undergoing many surgeries just to clean out wounds in a 'wait and see' mode for infections. Hardware cannot be inserted into her leg until the infections are gone. She will also begin skin graft surgeries when the infections are under control. She has been told it will be 1-2 years for her to walk again. We understand she is dealing with the very painful process with acceptance. Her Mom says she is an "extremely strong young woman."

Update: 10/14/2012 Helaina is doing ok but we understand we missed her Birthday, which was near the end of September. We know she received cards from her hometown but maybe we can kick in with some belated Happy Birthday or Happy Halloween cards for her. That should make for some smiles. :)

Update: 12-16-12 Exciting news for Helaina! She was able to return home for the holidays to spend time with family. The full story and video of the amazing "hero's welcome" she received can be viewed here:(just copy/paste this link to your browser) http://www.wcsh6.com/news/article/222394/2/Injured-Sgt-Helaina-Lake-returns-home

UPDATE: 08-21-13 Sgt Helaina is making tremendous strides in her recovery by working with both her occupational & physical therapists for one hour each day on a number of exercises to help her increase her upper body strength, motor skills and coordination. She has been home with her son for some time now and keeping busy with a few little improvements and painting. Helaina has endured more than 30 surgeries since she was first injured and is set to return to the hospital for another surgery very soon. Heterotopic Ossification has developed in the soft tissue on her most injured leg and the doctors will need to remove the abnormal growth. Her ultimate goal is to be able to run again as she was very athletic during her high school years. Be thinking healing thoughts for Helaina as she prepares for another surgery and hopefully she is one step closer to walking, or better yet - running with her young son.
